Every vape shop owner asks the same question sooner or later: how much do I actually keep from each sale? The honest answer is that it depends on what you sell, how you buy it and how you price it. This guide breaks down how margin works across devices, pods and e-liquids, shows a worked example, and explains how the new vaping duty changes the maths for wholesale e-liquids from October 2026.

Markup and margin are often mixed up, and the difference matters when you set prices. Markup is profit as a percentage of what you paid. Margin is profit as a percentage of what you sell for. If you buy an item for £5 and sell it for £10, that is a 100% markup but a 50% margin. Most retailers track margin, because it tells you how much of every pound taken at the till you actually keep.
Four things decide what you keep from each sale:
Margins vary from shop to shop, but the pattern across categories is fairly consistent.
| Category | Typical Margin Pattern | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Replacement pods | Steady | High repeat demand; customers buy them every week or two |
| Nic salts and e-liquids | Healthy, but now affected by duty | Low unit cost and frequent repeat purchases |
| Prefilled pod kits | Moderate | Competitive pricing, but each kit leads to pod sales |
| Refillable devices | Lower | Customers compare prices online before buying |
| Coils and accessories | Often the highest | Low cost, rarely price-checked, frequent add-on |
The kit itself is rarely where the money is. The real return comes from the replacement pods each customer comes back for. Price kits competitively to win the customer, then make sure you always have their pods in stock. Our guide to prefilled pod kits wholesale covers which devices are worth stocking.
Ten-millilitre nic salts have long been one of the most dependable earners in any vape shop: low cost, fast turnover and loyal repeat buyers. The new duty has raised their cost, though, so the pricing needs a fresh look. More on that below.
Refillable pod kits are easy for customers to price-check, so margins tend to be tighter. Coils and accessories are the opposite: small, inexpensive items that customers add at the counter without comparing prices.
Here is how to calculate margin on a single line. The figures below are illustrative, not current trade prices — swap in your own costs from your invoices.
| Step | Example Figure |
|---|---|
| Wholesale cost per unit (ex VAT) | £3.00 |
| Shelf price (inc VAT) | £6.00 |
| Shelf price excluding VAT (£6.00 ÷ 1.2) | £5.00 |
| Profit per unit (£5.00 − £3.00) | £2.00 |
| Margin (£2.00 ÷ £5.00) | 40% |
The step people most often miss is removing VAT from the shelf price before working out margin. Skip it and your margin will look about a fifth higher than it really is.
Since 1 October 2026, vaping liquid carries a flat duty of £2.20 per 10ml, with VAT charged on top. Because the duty is based on volume, it hits large bottles hardest and small pods least. A 2ml prefilled pod picks up a fraction of the duty of a 100ml shortfill. Our full breakdown of the UK vape tax 2026 has the figures by product type.
For margins, this means two things. First, if you hold your old shelf price while your cost rises, your margin shrinks; most shops will need to pass at least part of the increase on. Second, the relative appeal of different formats shifts: pods and 10ml nic salts become more attractive to stock compared with large shortfills, simply because the duty adds less to each sale.
Our best-selling wholesale products are a good place to start building a high-turnover range, and the clearance section is worth checking for lines with extra margin.
What is a good profit margin for a vape shop?
There is no single figure, because margins differ by product category. Accessories and nic salts usually carry the strongest margins, while refillable devices are the tightest. Track margin by category rather than as one overall number to see where your profit really comes from.
How do I calculate margin on vape products?
Take the shelf price, remove VAT by dividing by 1.2, subtract your wholesale cost, then divide the result by the ex-VAT price. For example, £6.00 inc VAT becomes £5.00; minus a £3.00 cost leaves £2.00, which is a 40% margin.
Has the 2026 vape tax reduced retail margins?
It can, if shelf prices are not adjusted. The duty of £2.20 per 10ml raises the cost of all vaping liquid, so retailers who keep old prices absorb that cost. Most shops are passing on at least part of it, and small-volume formats like pods are less affected.
Which vape products have the best margins?
Coils, chargers, spare pods and 10ml nic salts usually give the best margin per sale, because they are low-cost and rarely price-checked. Refillable devices tend to have the lowest, since customers often compare prices online before buying.
Is there a minimum order to buy wholesale?
